i am in the process of doing a dual disc swap on my 1981 xj650 maxim. The donor bike is a 1982 xj750 maxim.

I have the 750 forks installed and the front wheel mounted with twin rotors installed.

Calipers are not on yet, still cleanin those up.
Axle is torqued to spec (77 ft lbs) but the wheel doesn’t seem to spin as freely as I think it should.
All spacers etc are in place, any ideas? Should there be resistance to the free spin when it is torqued to spec?

One item do you have the speedo pickup aligned with the notch on the lower fork? And is it aligned with the wheel properly? This where I would check.

Yes this is in the notch, good idea!

Another good idea! I’ll test it out.

are you using the spacers from 650 or 750?
never mind the parts are the same.

Bearings spin freely but I suspect they are pretty old.
Going to install new bearings, cheap insurance!

While apart check the inner spacer is between the bearings and in good shape.
Ive seen theese missing, damaged, or worn lots from bad bearings, it makes the bearings pinch together when the axle is torqued and they will fail quickly.

It’s in good shape. I knocked out the old bearings tonight. They spun but were stiff.
    New set comes Friday.

New bearings are good. FYI, it is possible to drive the second bearing in too far against the spacer causing the bearing to bind up and side load in your wheels. Removing the bearing is considered destructive to he bearing and you'll have to buy another set. BTDT ;) Just tap it in until it just touches the spacer. Too loose and the outer spacer will cause it to bind as well when you tighten up the axle. Think of the spacers and the bearing inner races as one piece.

    Pic attached to illustrate.

Ok bearings changed, just snug against spacer. It’s a little bit better, I guess it’s just the way it is!

On the caliper mounting bolts, there are 2 washers. A lock washer and a flat washer.
Do these both go between the bolt head and the mount point or does the flat washer go in between the mounting point and the caliper?

The flat washer goes under the lock washer, not the way you have it.

Ok I am an idiot. Forks were uneven by an 1/8th of an inch. I know I checked that at the beginning of this but it was late and a couple beers. Readjusting now but already spins better now that I have the forks loose.

I am putting 1982 XJ750 forks in there. Should it be even with the bottom of the adjustment dial?
