Hey guys I'm working on a 1983 XJ650 that I got as a gift and had to rewire it because it was just a mess. I've done the minimal wiring following a few diagrams I've found but have some questions about it and some modifications that I'm looking to do. I've attached the diagrams that I followed in case you havent seen them yet.
So my question with the minimal wiring is how do I wire the pickup coils? Do I just plug it in how it was with the two black wires that run together? Or do I split them up? If I split them up, where do I plug the second black wire? Sorry if this sounds dumb but I'm just not sure of what to do.

The things I'd like to add to the minimal wiring are the speedo and turn signals. I'm really bad with wiring/electrical things so if you can explain it to me to the fullest extent, that would help me tremendously. I'd like to add a speedometer like the one attached. and for the turn signals I'd like to add some small led handlebar end lights, fork lights and some small rear led lights. Could anyone help me with exactly everything I would need for it to function properly? I know I'm asking a lot but I'm trying my best with my first bike. Thanks in advance for any help!

Okay thank you for this but what I'm not sure about is the wires off the pickup coil. Do you see how there's an orange, gray, and two black wires (that join up to one black wire)? The other two diagrams that I attached, show the two black wires staying separated instead of joining. What should I do? Do I just leave the plug how it is stock and plug it in like that or do I split the black wire up? I'm not too sure how it all works together but I think it should be fine just keeping the plug stock and having the single black wire go to the ignitor. Any suggestions?

probably doesn't matter, if you have a meter, check if the tci pins for the black wire are the same

just use the original connector from the pickups. I would also use original commector for the other port in the tci even if you have to buy the connectors and pins/contacts

i just looked at mine, there's no connector inside the plug for both blacks, join them and use one wire

Pretty sure it just depends on the year. For example, 81 and earlier 650 Maxim uses four wires and the 82 and later uses three wires with the black as a common wire. If you're using the stock harness for the pickup to the TCI I wouldn't worry about it. If you are not using the stock harness and you have four wires originally, a quick continuity test on the igniter should tell you if they are common or not.

Ah okay this makes a lot of sense. I’m using the stock part of the harness for that so I’ll just keep it like that. Thank you guys for clearing it up!

Anyone have any suggestions for a flasher to use for LED signal lights?

When it comes to LEDs I prefer the “three prong” flashers with ground.
