Start button from XJ650

    I ride a 1982 XJ550 Maxim, my start button hasn't worked for a while and I was wondering if a start button from an XJ650 maxim would fit my bike and plug right in.

    Nope.
    Have you disassembled the control housing and cleaned the switch contacts, or checked for broken solder connections?
    The switch is a very simple thing.

    It hasn't worked since last September. I've tried just about everything that's been suggested on here and no luck. I just broke down and I'm having a mechanic look at it, but he was curious if an XJ650 switch would work for my XJ550

    Well I'm wrong. The 550 and 650 use the same switch.
    The reason whay I asked the prior question is that unless the plastic button is broken, or the contacts are rusted-out, there is no reason that it would need to be replaced instead of repaired/ cleaned.
    Is it correct to assume that you unplugged the switch and jumped the two wires to rule out everything but the switch?

    what did you do to your bike last September?

    did you add a jumper wire from the control ground to the connector and hook it to the ignition coil mounting bolt to ensure ground or some other suitable ground point,
    I see from other posts you have painted bars

    you should hear 2 clicks when you turn on the key 1 is sidestand relay under the seat the other is the starter safety relay under the tank

    also try unplugging your clutch safety switch in the headlight bucket this will make it so the bike will only start in neutral.
    and pull out the side stand relay
    this will eliminate them as problems.

    did you buy a new starter button?

    testing starter button
    go to the connector for thr control harness ( not the main harness) set meter to continuity (squeal) or ohms.
    hook meter leads to black wire and blue/white wire..
    press starter button, meter should squeal or give you 0.0 ohms
    if you get those readings button is good.

    next with control on handle bars
    connect black lead from meter to battery ground and red lead to same blue/white wire
    press starter button
    meter should squeal or give you 0.0 ohms
    if you get those readings ground is good through handle bars.
