    what’s everyone running?
Looking mainly for something to keep bike cool when tuning.

I’ve been eyeballing one of those HF 3 speed blowers. We have a 36” fan at the farm but it’s big, overkill, and currently in need of a new motor. For $43 with a 20% coupon it seems like it would fit the bill

I live on the High Plains, so I just open the garage door and let the breeze cool her.

On the four days out of the year that we don't have any wind I use use a 20" household fan.
Overheating a aircooled engine under a no-load/ light-load condition takes quite a bit of effort.

    I gotcha.
I’ve never had an air cooled bike and it just seemed like from reading posts about tuning that more airflow was critical

It can be if you're going to use the YICS blanking tool when you synch (the YICS manifold gets pretty toasty). Otherwise you won't be running her long enough to worry too much.
Not all air cooled machines can tolerate idling for long periods though.

Most air cooled engines are designed to "heat soak" it means the mass of metal, cooling fins to cylinder sleeves, is designed with enough mass and cooling surface to get so hot, it physically cant get any hotter, like 200 degrees C!
Ever notice how when you pull off a long red light in the summer, the heat "cloud" off the engine feels like it going to light your pants on fire as you drive through it? ;)
    This is that principal
An air cooled atv with a fan for overheat will NEVER! Turn on while iding, or tuning, it wont get past heat soak.
Only pulling a load in low range at low speed will kick the fan on.
Yr safe fr idling n tuning, or a small fan, a stiff breeze or a few well brewed farts will do. ;)

While I don’t have a YICS tool, I’ve kinda committed myself to do things the hard (correct) way so I’ll be using the ol “oil soaked rag method”.

We have a pretty stout pedestal fan that should do the job, I’m just one of those guys always looking for an excuse to buy more tools and equipment

You can save yourself 30 minutes by skipping that part of the synch procedure and still get 99.99% of the way to perfect.

If you do block the ports be really careful to not exceed the torque specs for the YICS gallery bolts, and use new crush washers. We've come across more vacuum leaks due to cracks there than I ever thought possible. The nut who turns the wrench can be a real hazard to the health of machinery.

I had to replace my A/C unit last year. The blower motor had been replaced about 3 years ago. So I took the birdcage fan and motor, added a plug, switch, and a small dam on the front and have a great fan for moving a lot of air and especially for cooling my engine while working on it. Some might call it overkill, but it was almost free and it works great around the garage.
