After all the hours I have spent trouble shooting my 81 XJ550 I still cannot figure out my firing issue. I am starting to suspect the igniter. Is there anyone with an XJ550 willing to test mine on their bike? I'll ship it and pay for shipping back. Would greatly appreciate it. I live in Mississippi in case there is someone close by but I could ship it pretty much anywhere in the states.

Man I've tested everything I know to test. Coils all in spec on primary and secondary. Caps in spec. Pickup coils in spec. New plugs. I've checked all the grounds I can find and cleaned them. New (cheap) battery but plenty voltage and 10 1/2 volts or so when cranking engine over. Voltages good at igniter and coil plugs. Have also tried with jumper cables from car battery just to rule out my battery. Kickstand switch disabled and disconnected the wire for it from the igniter (Black and white wire) Every once in a while I can get it to fire up and run and ride it for 10 minutes or so then it dies. Basically it starts and runs for a bit when it wants to! Have been working on it off and on for about 2 years and am at a loss.

when it starts and you ride it for 10 min and it dies test the pickup coils .
I would take my 550 for a test ride and it would die in the same spot on my test loop. a few times it would restart after 1/2 hour until it would not start any more ended up being a failing to failed pickup coil.

Mine hasn't hit a lick since the last time I rode it and it died. It's been this way since I've had it. Like I said, it seems to run when it wants to. I tested the pickup coils and they did test in spec. I happen to have a spare set I bought on ebay back when I thought that was my problem once then never used them. Do ya think it's worth swapping them and trying the spares? I don't guess it would hurt?

I just bolted my pickups to the existing holder instead of trying to change the full set up. note which one goes where by the color of the wires.

if the pickups ohm out correctly ohm them to ground (not black wire but the frame) all 3 wires you should get no reading.

I just changed them out with the spare set of pickup coils I have. Still no fire, What's the blue wire in the pickup coil harness? I couldn't find it on the schematic.
