I have an 81 xj550 seca that I'm "fixing up" after being put away in a garage for 7 years. I swapped out the airbox because of missing parts and went with k&n filters and got a small filter from the parts store for the crankcase vent. I'm still trying to find the best jet combination but my concern is that the filter on the crankcase is smoking quite bit after the bike is warmed up.

Is this a sign of more than oil in the crankcase or just normal?

I've also found low compression of around 90 psi on cylinders 1 and 4

    Thanks in advance

could be blow by at the rings , rings could be stuck.
is it fresh oil in the motor?
the filter you put on should be on a hose to let oil vapor condense

on a side note have you checked the valve clearances yet that could be why you have low compression on the 2 cylinders.

no point to going through rejetting if shims are out of spec.

I checked valve clearances before I got it running and replaced shims as needed. I am going to recheck shims soon. I know one is out of spec.

I changed the oil when I got it. It's only been run a few hours and maybe two miles since I've had it running.

If it is blow by at the rings how could I fix that?

I'll be putting a hose on before the filter the next time I work on it

Pull the spark plugs and put a tablespoon of ATF and acetone mixed at 1:1 down each hole. Let it sit for a week. Start the engine and ride for a bit (it will smoke a lot initially). That usually frees up stuck rings.

Does it matter if I leave the plugs out or put them back in?

Put them back in to keep crud from dropping into the bores.
