ive got a cheap pair of calipers and wondering if they’re reading correctly. Trying to get a new headlight setup.

    Thanks

When was the last time you had the calipers checked for accuracy?
The upper fork tubes are 36mm OD.

A dime is 1.35mm thick (measured across the diameter). If your calipers don't read a dime accurately then you need a better pair. Neiko makes a very good hobby-grade set that sell for less than $20.

They’re fairly new. 6mos at most.

Once I got home (I’m on overnight shift at the moment) I didn’t have a dime around but I cross referenced the calipers to drill bits. The calipers nailed every one of them. Went back over to the bike and yes the inner forks are 36mm but the upper forks are 43mm (or was it 42 I’m forgetting) where I would be mounting brackets would be there, not the chrome forks.

I’m no old school biker (or really a biker at all I just bought the thing and chopped it up to make it how I wanted it) and may have used the wrong words to describe where I’m talking about. The fork tubes between the triples.

    Thanks for the help guys

The section I’m talking about isn’t even included in that diagram. What are the tubes between the triples called?

I think that you have a Midnight Maxim and are measuring the fork shrouds. They slip right off when you remove the forks from the triple clamps.

Hmm....is modifying a Midnight Maxim a sin around here? I forget.

If that is your bike, then it's to late to worry about that anyway.

The headlight bucket isn't OEM, but the bracket is.

Definitely a sin, but I’m cool with it!

Okay so they’re called fork shrouds! Gotcha. Mine are measuring 43mm and I will be buying some new brackets to install a new headlight. The entire bike is going to get gone thru and painted over the summer. Not much is stock.

You'll want to mount the headlight bracket to the fork tubes, which will require removing the shrouds. The shrouds are purely cosmetic and will not hold up to having anything mounted to them.

Sounds good, I’ll be doing that when I rebuild the forks in the coming months
