I’m not the fastest rider on the road but I sometimes get passed by other riders on the right side. What are your thoughts on this practice?
    Happy holidays to all :D

Yeah, the sidewalk isn't so good either.

I don't really care. I figure if they MUST ignore the speed limit, they might as well pass me on the right to do it. That way, they get two infractions for the price of one.

If there is an actual lane on the right, then you are in the wrong too.

Move to the right hand lane - and get out of the way of these people. I'm not saying that because I feel you'd be wrong to hang out in the left lanes, but because you're taking a risk getting of involved in their antics.

If they are passing you in your own lane - they are absolutely in the wrong and you shouldn't be happy with it.

Where are you positioning yourself in the lane? If you cut the lane into 5 parts, left most being 1 (on the paint), 3 being the exact middle, and 5 being the right paint - you should generally find yourself in the 2 position. There are exceptions and scenarios where you may find yourself in 3 and 4... but very rarely in 1 and 5.

How fast do you ride? Do you often have a string of people behind you? I had a friend who was really nervous at first - and they were overly cautious... that put them in really dangerous positions more than once. They've grown out of it, but being overly cautious can lead to this type of thing happening.

This doesn't happen to me - and I wonder if it is you, your crazy town, or the crazy local bikers.

I guess I just want to learn more before I say what it is - above I've just outlines possibilities I can think of...

I ride in the #2 part of the as stated by Woot. I do about 10 KPH over the speed limit. I ride a Yamaha not a Vespa! The passing happens in a single lane and there not a line of cars behind me. I really don’t have a problem with this as long as I can signal them to pass but how do I give the all clear without taking my hand of the throttle?

Passing on the right is akin to "I'm more than one marble short in the bag". I'm not one to advocate using your right hand to signal anything short of "I'm bailing!!!". Your right hand belongs on that throttle. If the nut jobs wish to pass on the right, make sure that you keep steady and pray they don't whack you in their moment of stupidity. If I had some idiot want to pass on the right and wished to clear them, I'd signal the right turn indicator, move to the right so they would have a safe, clear path, and wave them by with my left hand. But I rarely encounter this type of idiot, they tend to ignore double yellows and pull by on the left.

ya - I'd never want them on my inside (right)... I haven't had anyone do that, but I have had people pass on the left over a double yellow.

If I were you I'd move to the 3 position and force them to go around on your left... or pull over and get away from them.

Seriously - where do you live - that's just crazy

I live in Southern Ontario 30 minutes south east of London. 15 minutes north of Lake Erie. The first time I was passed on the right was on my way to Friday 13th in Port Dover by several riders. The second time I was returning from Niagara Falls on Hi way 3 near Jarvis. At least it was a guy on a V Max! :p. I cought up to him in town at a red light.

I'll take my ticket and Plead Not Guilty for NOT Riding in the Right Hand Lane.

The right hand lane is where the Heavy Trucking does a number on the highway. On Massachusetts Roads ... you can FEEL the difference moving to the Left.

I watch my mirrors and if someone is overtaking me ... I'll signal and move over for them. If they look like they don't care and will blow by on nthe right ... I let 'em go.

The right lane is a washboard.
The further left you can get is smoother and safer ... in my opinion, anyway!

I was riding to a big bike nite ,outside of philly last year and was passed by to guys, one on my left and one on the right at the same time(65mph).It was a 2 lane highway and the guy on my right wizzed up the shoulder in lite gravel, looked like he almost wrecked.Kinda scared me.there was plenty of room on the road.Turns out they were from some bike club(pagans maybe).I saw them later at the bike nite looked like they were kinda drunk.

Speaking of Pagans, I remember going to see the Stones at JFK in Philly in '81. It was general admission, with the doors opening at 7am. Most arrived the night before, to could get in at 7am and get decent seats. Around 10-11 am after most of the stadium was full, a mess of Pagans drove their "bikes" into the stadium, and through the crowd, knocking down and driving over anyone who got in their way. What I remember most though, was that their "bikes" were the biggest pieces of shit I've ever seen. A rat bike would look down on these rolling piles of rust and house paint.

With the lack of signals from the cagers in this world, I don't even pass on the right to make a right hand turn. My last bike was wiped out by a van turning right without a signal, and the only blessing from the whole thing was I was only going about 15mph. Sad way to lose a bike though, nice that I found my lost marble so I have a full bag again.

As I'm in Oz - I'll take this whole conversation as 'Passing on the left'.

And No, all it shows is the other rider is a d***, tho if I see a faster rider coming up from behind, I will usually move left, so he can over take on the right, even if it is in my lane.

There's a Vmax rider in Sudbury with a red one.
He doesn't seem exactly sane. It could have been him.

Best bet is give these morons every chance in the world to pass on the left.
I had a sportbike rider do it to me in the twisties @ 70MPH. I was dragging the pegs on my bike and he scared the crap out of me. I was focused on the road, and BAM there he was... there he went.
    Idiot.
