Problem with these.. is that even though it was "free" or "cheap" .. they end up being the most expensive bikes.

unless motor is damaged 1500 will have a mighty nice bike under your seat. that would cover tires wheel bearings brake system rebuild, fork seals and hardware carbs rebuilt petcocks shims seat cover and padding and a few odds and ends. even at 2 grand you will have quite a ride and can work on shinny stuff as you ride it
go crazy on paint and the skys the limit

At least it has the air box with it! In the pic is that all that came with the bike? I have a XS1100 I am still working out the kinks on, so I will be watching you work on yours. One of the things you might need to check is the wires on the left side for the timing pickup. The blue wire on mine was broke (common) and needed to be soldered. The nice thing with these bikes is the carbs area okay to pull and put back in.

Keep us posted with progress and when needed step away from her for a bit if it gets overwhelming.

Yep! when I picked her up she was grown into the weeds ! She looks relatively together! Unfortunately I've noticed today she is fork locked. Any idea on how to fix that. The key is no longer with it.

Disconnect the old ignition switch [key part] and buy a new one. The ignition switch has a post that sticks out when you turn the key to lock the forks.

I am not one to tell others what to do, but that bike might not be worth the time and energy. I would focus on the engine first; compression, leak down, shims etc.... If everything looks good with the powerplant then move to the carbs. there is a reason the bike was at the junk yard. you dont want to find out 75% into the build that its a middle gear or bearing are shot in the motor.

ignition is held in place with 2 bolts 10 mm and a long extension and it is off. also the key number may still be visable on bottom of lock order a key off of ebay there are 2 vendors 1 sells 1 cut key 10$ the other sells 2 cut keys 20$.

my 550 had trees growing up through the wheels and one going up between rear fender and motor

Clean and lube the ignition switch
