black and sooty can be lean unless wet.

did you do a wet set of fuel levels or just float height?

did you bench sync the carbs followed by running sync?

mixture screw adjustments where did you set them to start?

have you color tuned or plug chopped to check mixture?

you could open up the mixture screw on the sooty carb a bit , see how hot the exhaust pipe is compared to the others opening mixture screw up should increase temp some and decrease soot.

sounds like you have both oem and after market plug caps have you checked the resistance?
is the sooty cylinder the oem cap (screwslots inside plug side)
swap the caps for the sooty and its sister cylinder. 1 and 4 or 2 and 3. caps should be different styles for 1 & 4 vs 2 & 3.

if nothing changes , temp or soot. swap spark plugs.
