    Why don't you just get some replacement valve springs and bolt up the offending hole in the side?
    Lots of XJ's share the same parts for the springs. Lot less mither too than replacing a complete head and cams.

    edit: ha just realised you'd have to take off the head to replace the valve springs. Ignore my previous post. Doh!

    After pricing used heads and valve springs, it just makes more sense to me to find a good used one. Especially with that plug being knocked out. And k-moe, thanks for the info. My first bike when i was 18 was an 81 midnight maxim 650. I never had to put a wrench to it besides oil changes. So my sons project is going to be a learning curve for both of us.
