    Hello!

Pulled my stator today on an 83 xj750 mid Max, put it back in and it won’t forever up anymore, some crusty wires cane off the stator. It does have continuity that read at 3 ohms with the battery disconnected. Curious if anyone can tell a good from a bad by a couple pics?

    Cheers and thanks in advance!

The stator has nothing to do with being able to have spark. If the stator fails the engine will still run until the battery voltage drops below the threshold needed for spark to be made.

A visual inspection is no way to tell if a stator is good or not. If wires came off you would read infinite resistance in the affected winding.

The copper traces of the rotor need to be cleaned (use a hard eraser on them). Check the brushed for wear. There are limit lines pressed into them.

    Thanks k-moe!

Brushes are fine, a lot left before the limit lines! Was weird that it started yesterday and after removing and reinstalling the stator it won’t turn over. Battery does drain quickly and it’s a new battery so my head went straight to the stator. Any suggestions?

    Cheers!

Find out why your battery is draining quickly. First thing I would look into is a faulty regulator/rectifier. When they go bad they will drain a battery.

    Checking Alternator Stators
    :

Measure the resistance across each pair (white1 to white2, white1 to white3, and white2 to white3) of the three white wires (white1, white2, and white3) at the connector; the specifications should be:

    0.46 ohms +/- 10% for all XJ650, all XJ700, all XJ750, and XJ900RK models.

    Checking Alternator Rotors:

Measure the resistance across the two lead wires (usually brown and green) at the connector; the specifications should be:.
    4.0 ohms +/- 10% for all XJ650, all XJ700, all XJ750, XJ900RK, and XJ1100 models.

rotor test above is when assembled. test copper rings with rotor exposed

read tests and specs in the link provided

    Thank you xj550h!
I will get on this! I took my coils and leads in to be checked properly today, would I do this with battery hooked up? I’m assuming that could be a bad idea lol. Thanks again!

if on bike and closed you would disconnect the 2 connectors to do reading. battery in place would not matter. the link also covers basic issues to look at based on when motor is running and charging
