Ok , it's been a while since I've posted anything here but I'm back. I'm finally going to start working on replacing my Maxim's starter clutch and primary chain guide. My question is what's the easiest way to remove the exhaust system? Collector and headers as one piece or remove each header individually? After almost three years I look forward to hopefully riding it again this year yet.

    Thanks!

After reading through some of the "how to" post I came across this in Hogfiddles signature: https://www.xjcd.org/emergency_guidectomy
The last paragraph makes it sound as if running with a broken guide will not result in the chain ever hitting the case. I'm not even sure mine's bad. I do know the starter clutch is but at worst if it refuses to engage it always bump starts easily. So what's the worst case if the guide is bad and I continue to run it, other than a possible shifting issue? Thoughts?

That is incorrect. What that paragaph is saying is that the chain will not hit the part of the casting where the guide mounts to the upper case. The chain will hit the case (I have no photos, but my eyes saw the damage on my own engine when the guide broke), and also wear away the steel oil nozzle that lubricates the chain. Removing the broken peices of guide is a very temporary measure. Replacing the guide is absolutely required if you want to keep the machine in working order.
