Replacement for TCI ignition module- xj650 Seca

    I have a 650 seca I've been tinkering with off and on for a few years, cant seem to get it running well enough to get on the road. Cylinders 1 and 2 warm up quickly, 4 warms up very slowly, 3 barely warms after it has run for awhile

    Compression tests in the 120-130 range
    pickups measure right at 650 ohms
    coil primary and secondary resistance checks okay
    battery voltage to primary side of coils is good
    voltage across the two coil leads will pulse up to 7 volts on each coil
    Carbs have been removed and cleaned 3 times with new jets installed

    I'm a little stumped.

    Is there a replacement TCI from another yamaha model that can be adapted to work? I am reluctant to buy used.

    the floats are set, the mixture is adjusted, checked for vacuum leaks and a running sync done ?

    That sounds like a fuel problem rather than an ignition problem.

    These engines run wasted spark, and each coil supplies two cylinders. One TCI operates both coils. A TCI problem isn't going to be cylinder-specific. A bad coil might affect one or two cylinders, but not these. 3 and 4 are from different coils.

    There are brand new aftermarket ignition boxes made. There is a whole thread on them here. I doubt that will fix your problem, though.

    Get a spark tester, they are cheap. See if 3 and 4 get spark. If they do, it's probably not your ignition.

    Are your plug caps making a good connection to the high tension leads on the affected cylinders? Are the plugs on the affected cylinders fouled? If you switch the leads ie swap 1 and 4 and 2 and 3 to check if the symptoms reverse. Worth a try. If they don't it is probably a carburettor problem.

    XJ650 models:

    Pick-up coils:
    1982 XJ650RJ Seca (non-yics engines): 700 ohms +/- 20% = 560 ohms to 840 ohms acceptable range
    1982 XJ650RJC Seca (yics engine): 650 ohms +/- 20% = 520 ohms to 780 ohms acceptable range

    check the motor vin to confirm what it is.
    1982 XJ650 Seca USA : 5V2
    1982 XJ650 Seca Canada: 5V3

    motor yics or non yics check for the passage bolts

    New plug boots, new intake boots

    I checked float levels tonight and they all look pretty low, like 6-8 mm from top of bowl. Seems like it should be within 1-2 mm of top of bowl. Can anyone confirm?

    1-2 is closer than 6-8. to save a little bit of time, when the seam on the float is parallel with the carb body your getting close.
    there's a better way to dry set them but i forget what it is

    this link has the info you need to do the job
    -Fuel level measured via the clear-tube gauge: 3mm +/- 1mm (.12 +/- .04 inches) -Float height: 17.5 +/- 0.5mm

    Setting the fuel levels

    so have you ID'ed the motor as the correct motor?
