It's been unseasonably warm here in Toronto so I thought I'd take out the XJ650 Maxim with those nice flat cafe bars. I'd put the bike away in early October and neglected to drain the gas, change the oil, take out the battery or anything else. I know, I know... I'm evil. So I turned the key late last night and after a few stumbles due to the heavy moisture in the air, she caught and sat on choke for a few minutes to warm up. After turning off the choke, man it was nice to snap that throttle and hear her rev up so nice and smooth with her nasty little snarl. That 4-into-1 MAC header hooked up to the short 17-inch Jama end-can sure sounds sweet and raspy.
These bikes are amazing. Park it without a thought and 3 months later they fire right up ready to ride. I took the bike out for a spin and it felt great. She got dirty as hell and I had to clean off road filth for an hour but man, it was worth it!

Aren't XJ650 Maxims so much better as cafe style bikes?
Those stock buckhorn bars are totally gay and useless for turning. I put on cafe bars with a very slight 1" lift. I shaved down that ridiculous Gunfighter and Lady style throne seat. Now there's just a very slight rise to the back half of the seat. Then I put on a black headlight fairing. Mine came off a totaled BMW R90 but (totaled but for the fairing). Unfortunately, some piece of shite moron backed into my bike while it was parked, knocking it over and thus smashing the fairing and the rear leftside signal light and post. I have to get another bikini fairing and I've seen them in the denniskirk.com catalog. As for the signals, I kept the guts and bulbs from the rear signals then used those amber, cone-shaped corner lights used on RVs. I fabricated a couple of brackets and there you go, rear signals that don't stick out 6 inches on either side and look pretty cool. Also, I took off those massive front signal lights and posts that belong on a bus. As a replacement I used ministalks with clear lenses and amber bulbs but I hooked them up through the bolt holes that hold the headlight to the headlight bracket. Looks way better.
Once you've Cafe'd the XJ650 Maxim it is a very cool looking bike that handles well. Good luck with the cafe job.
    thx,
