    Hey guys!

I have a 1983 XJ750 Maxim and I just cleaned up my carbs and while removing the tank I noticed I didn't have an inline fuel filter on the fuel line going to the carbs. However, taking the carbs appart, I noticed that I had mesh filter on every float valve.

My question is: Would it be a better idea to add a fuel filter (paper) on the line itself and keep the mesh filters, or remove the mesh filters and add the inline filter. Or just keep it as is.

The tank barely as any rust inside and its running a gravity petcock.

I’d maintain at least 2 filters, and you already have one in your tank.

I’m a fan of inline filters but I use the ones Chacal sells. They are brass elements I think.

the float valve seat screens are a nice thought but I don’t think you can get them anymore. Myself and several others I’m sure don’t run them

The screen on the petcock standpipe is in no way a filter. It'll keep big stuff out, but anything smaller than 1mm will head straight into the carbs.

Chacal still has a supply of the float seat screens, but they aren't realy needed unless a body wants to have a completly stock restoration for show (some clubs mark off points for any aftermarket part that's visible).

I would still use and in-line filter. Better than the screens and a lot easier to replace.

The best filters are paper element, however some of them will not flow enough fuel in a gravity system (they are meant for fuel pumps).

Stay away from the clear plastic filters if you are in a ethanol area. They will have a chemical reaction that will dis form and dis color the clear plastic.
