I would start with easiest checks. Check your fuses if they are the old glass tube style replace the fuse box. Replace with blade style fuses. There is a how to in the Form Index. XJ FAQ Welcome to the form lots of info here.

Any Yam older than 15 years , you should replace the fuse box. Will cost ya £3 at your local motor shop.

"should".. i know this is a precautionary statement, but for instance how imperitve is it if everything is fine at this time- what im asking is, how bad could it be other than the bike not starting if the box fails?- could it fail in a fatal way in which there would be irrepairable damage you think? just wondering because Im one cheap bas*** :)

Imagine dipping the bars out to the left and twisting the throttle full on as you hop out into the oncoming lane to pass the slow tractor trailer in front of you. That's when you see the truck coming at you about an eighth of a mile away. You conclude you've got just enough room to pass the truck and get in line when all of a sudden your bike just quits...

The accident investigator determines that the cause was because the fuse block failed from age. The main fuse terminals cracked from age and heat, causing the bike to loose power. Unfortunately, it was at the worst possible moment.

Okay, maybe that's a little extreme. But I'd be willing to bet members here could tell you their own versions of this horror story. Change the fuse box.

I`ve found that you`ll press the starter and it will only work when it wants, or maybe your neutral light wont work. I s`pose it could be fatal if your oil light failed (mine did) and you didnt realise that your engine was empty of oil . Mine had plenty of oil, but mostly its just really annoying. It affected my brake light sometimes , then the starter , all the warning lights, oil, high beam , indicators. or just the lights wont work. Witch could be fatal if they go at the wrong time.Dont buy a Yamaha one , get one from a car parts shop, a universal 5 fuse box. They are real cheap , easy to fit and will save you loads of hassle. I know a few people with old YAMS and have had a few myself , xs 750 triples , xs 250 , xs 400 twins. And its common that the fuse boxes need replacing.

That's too freaky!!! You must have been right behind me! I coasted back in behind and came to a safe stop on the side of the highway though.

    PS It was a motorhome.

That scenario is extreme , but with an old knacker`d fuse box, it could happen! Just change it.It will deffinately save you from pulling out your hair, and as Gamuru says It could save your life. Its so cheap to do , that Many people do it to their new yam , like changing the oil , filters , and plugs.
