Are you confused because the title says 82 but the VIN sticker shows an 81 date? The sticker shows the date of manufacture which can be earlier than the model year. Yours is most likely and 82/83 because of the YICS cover but people haves swapped motors before. Post up your VIN to be sure.

You have a common bike with lots of parts availability and knowledge, good luck with your project!

It’s an ‘82. YICS valve cover was not on the 80-81

I just acquired what appears to be a n XJ with no title. Other than the fact it's a 4cyl, shaft drive, mfr 5/80...I have no idea of what model it is.
My search for VIN decoder has been fruitless.

    Thanks.
It appears to be a 1981 XJ650 Maxim.
Though it was assembled in May 1980, the low serial number indicates its a VERY early 1981.

'81 serial numbers start at 100101
You have a 1980, just as the build date says.

TECH TOPIC: Model ID and VIN's
    short vin says
    4H700 = 1980 XJ650 Maxim USA

your bike would be a short vin only bike being a 1980

    http://www.dissingermoto.com

Prior to 1981, manufacturers could use a VIN number length of their choice, and Yamaha was no exception in this regard. In fact, because of the difficulty encountered with implementing this required 1981 changeover, Yamaha (and some other manufacturers) were granted a 9-month "stay of execution" for their 1981 model-year offerings, where they could still use their older (shorter) version VIN numbers to identify their products.

Thus 1980, 1981, and perhaps even some very early production 1982 model-year bikes use a shorter VIN number that appears on the frame of the bike (more about this later), and may also include a printed paper decal that lists a different (longer) VIN number that is the "extended", 17-posiiton version of the original, shorter VIN number.
    all info from
thread posted above . vin decoder is in that thread

Definately some of the early production 1982 bikes used the short VIN.
    I have one.

I know once you entersomething wrong you have to close it before reentering anything.

sn starts at 000101 for your year so your bike is 10133 bike off of the line not that early

It was returning the wrong year and sometimes model for some of the shorty vins.
