So my starter has recently decided to suddenly just disengage and start spinning. It will start compressing the engine, but sometimes if you keep it engaged for any length of time, you can hear the starter just spin with nothing else.

I assume this has to do with the starter clutch? Is there a way to fix this or does it just require a rebuild?

    Thanks!

does it sound like a can of rocks?
first are you using synthetic oil? this can be a problem switching back to regular oil may solve problem this may be a short term fix.
could be gummed up remove starter and spray clean it change oil after.
Is battery fully charged? do voltage drop test when starting.

yes to fix it requires case splitting, and you want to consider replacing chain guide and possibly chain.
    or change engine

it did start happening after I changed to synthetic. I have since gone back, but haven't run the bike since doing the new oil change. I will give that a go first and see where it goes from there.

I used Yamalube 10w40 this time but also just realized I’m missing the oil filter spring and washer. Oil was also leaking out through the oil filter bolt hole...soooo there’s that lol. I feel like anytime I fix something on this bike, something somewhere else gives me issues. My seca was a lot more friendly.

if it is leaking through the bolt you also need the bolt oring

i bought a brand new bolt with o-ring, so not sure why it would still be leaking.

could be that the oil passages are plugged and pressure is building up due to filter not being in the correct position
