Howdy everybody, I'm doing work on my rusty tank. I bought a POR kit, and followed their directions to get rid of rust and line the inside of the tank. Everything went smoothly, but I just discovered a new leak, after 4 days of curing the new POR seal. How does one plug up such things? Keep in mind I just put on some kind of epoxy coat (whatever POR is) on the inside of the tank...

And, on the petcock I got my fuel lines mixed up while replacing them. On the petcock, Is the primer the upper or lower line? Where does it run to, before or after the carbs?

There's only one fuel line on the petcock, the other is a vacuum line that operates the petcock diaphram. The fuel runs from the bottom of the petcock to the fuel inlet "T" between carbs #1 and #2, and the vacuum line runs from upper/back port to one of vacuum ports on the intake boots.

The upper line is the vacuum line and the lower (larger diameter) is the fuel outlet line.

Right, thanks. How about the hole? The parts store has tubes of permatex chemical weld stuff that advertise permanent repair of small holes. Anyone ever use these?

I'm not sure of the product you mentioned, but I have used a gas tank repair product that is a kind of epoxy. I mixed the two parts together and put it on with a small putty knife. After it dried, I sanded it down, primered and painted it. I used it on a bike tank and an automotive gas tank, so I am sure it works. Look at your local auto parts store and I'm sure they will have something for you.

So how does the prime/vacuum system work, anyway? I have the tank off right now, and the prime setting is the only one that lets out fuel. This seems messed up. Is my petcock spurting at the wrong times? I hope not. That could be really embarassing.

Fuel will only flow either when the engine is running and creating a vacuum on the intake, or it is set to prime. Prime is used when you have run out of fuel and need to switch to reserve, it allows the carbs to fill with fuel without engine running, or when it has been standing un-used and the fuel in the carbs has evaporated.

The vacuum opens the valve so the fuel runs only when the bike is running. The "Prime" setting will allow the fuel to run without the engine running (used to fill the carbs after they have been emptied from being worked on)
*If you want to check to see if the valve is working with the tank off the bike, just hook up a short piece of rubber tubing to the upper fitting and create a suction and the fuel should flow. >PD<
