Hello from a newbie

    Hi ,

    picked up this bike from social media with the hope of restoring it.
    I think the bike is a '81 XJ750J Seca? but im not too sure so im hoping you guys will be able to assist with the id of the bike.

    As you can see from the pictures it is very rough but it will get shot blasted where possible (frame etc) and powder coated.

    It will need a lot of new bits which include exhaust , headlight housing etc but i will keep updates coming as and when i work on it.

    Welcome to the forum, glad that you found it. Start reading and enjoy learning about your new bike.

    As long as the engine is good I think you have a good project on your hands. Both side covers, heck that is part of the hard parts to find right there! Take a look at the gas tank, if it is rusty don't skimp on a rust remover, get some good stuff do it right.

    As for the carbs, take them to the church of clean listed here:

    Take your time with the bike, go all through the electrical system contacts. Go through the brakes and all the good stuff that makes the bike safe for the road.

    I have been told the Mystery Oil on a rag will really reduce the oxide you have on most of the bike.

    Both side covers are present, they are on top of the bike on the seat in pic #3 :)

    You won’t see much of the frame once everything is back on anyway

    Did you drill or try the hammer test on the bottom rails of that frame before despatching it to the blasters? They can suffer from water ingress dreadfully.

    It was all blown out etc , the bottom of the frame had a little weld repair , which is what i didn't like the idea off but a local place said it is perfectly fine to weld a old motorcycle.

    Just need a few more little bits like handle bars , reflectors etc and it is almost ready to have a go on, full service underway.

    luckily it didn't have water in, but unlucky rot was already there from the past of it being left outside, done everything i can with the frame to make it good and strong etc , all done at home.

    I take a cross pein hammer and bang away at the bottom of the lower rails, if you hear rust breaking away, or manage to cave it in, you have some cutting and welding to do.
