This is my first bike and was unaware that jumping it with a car wasn’t the best idea (didn’t think it through). I was able to get the bike started with the jump, but the second I turned it off again it wouldn’t start afterward. I got a new battery and when I turn the key to on the lights work but the start button fails to do anything. I’m wondering what part(s) may have gone bad in the car jumping. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Jumping it from a car battery is fine... as long as you didn't reverse the polarity or something. 12V is 12V.

Are you sure it's not in gear? The starter won't engage if it's not in neutral. Are you sure the engine stop switch is set to Run?

Do you hear a click? Or just nothing?

Jumping is fine, if the car is off.
    Start by checking fuses

Welcome to the site! Always nice to have another wrencher try to bring the XJ's back to life. When you get the time give us a little background on what you have done to the bike so far. Have you checked oil, clean plugs, checked the valve specs... Then use the search to try to find others that have had the same issues as you. Take the time to read some of these articles from the support vend0r we have, great guy.

Make sure you did not knock the kill switch to the off position. This can be easily done.

thanks for the response, I did jump it with the car on. I’ve already put new fuses in, the bike is in neutral and run switch is in the right place. When I go to press the start button absolutely nothing happens however. I’ve checked the spark plugs and they seem fine for now. It seems to me that it could be a starter/solenoid problem as I’ve seen that in my truck before.

Do you have a meter? If not, get one.

Key on, in neutral, with kill switch set to run, you should have 12V at the R/W on the solenoid. Do you? There should also be 12V at the L/W (blue/white).

If you jumper the L/W to ground the solenoid should close and the starter should crank. Does it?

Went and got a meter and it all checked out. I ended up being able to get it started with the solenoid and now it fires up every time with the start button. Now it’s going it idles at high rpms but I can change it with the choke not sure what this new deal is, any suggestions?

If you haven't cleaned and overhauled the carbs, you will probably need to. You may also need to replace the carb holders (boots that bolt to the head).

Definitely check the easy stuff, though. Is the throttle cable routed correctly? Does the throttle twist and return easily? Can you adjust the idle with the idle screw?

The start solenoid is usually the problem , they are cheap and easy to replace , if you can jumper solenoid and it starts to crank there is problem.
