Xj550 won’t start

    Hi guys got a maxim xj550 , I’ve stripped it down to clean parts however since putting it back together today I turn on the ignition and press start and a horrible winding noise comes from the starter solenoid and no fire or anything just a strange noise , my battery was fully charged however I’m just about to put it on another charge just incase , any ideas guys

    Craig, is the engine turning over? If not you might want to test the starter motor. It's easy enough to take off then connect direct to a 12V battery.
    If that works your solenoid start switch end is the place to look next

    No getting nothing apart form a horrible squeal from the solenoid and it seams to be vibrating when I try to turn the bike over

    You sure that noise is coming from the solenoid? Usually the horrible noise when starting these bikes comes from the starter clutch, inside the crankcase. When that slips it makes a grinding noise that sounds a bit like nuts and bolts shaken in a can.

    You can bypass the solenoid by turning on the ignition and jumpering across the two large terminals of the solenoid with a heavy screwdriver or such. If that starts, or at least cranks normally, then you probably have a bad solenoid.

    One other possibility, though, is a bad battery, where the load once the solenoid closes pulls the battery down too much to keep the solenoid closed, so it opens, then it can close again, and the end result is that it just chatters.

    Was defo the solenoid mate , the battery was crap , just got a new battery and she roared at me first time , I nearly wet myself , thanks for your advice guys
