im having a no spark issue on my 85 Maxim xj700, ive run through about everything I can think of using a multimeter. I’m thinking coils. Primary is 3.5 and secondary isn’t registering anything. Is there anything else’s i should look at? And if not, what kinds of coils will work with the bike? Local dealers want to charge me nearly $400 just to get two new ones

meter set to correct setting? with caps on your looking for 22k ohms
did you remove spark plug caps to test?

    Ignition Coils:

Primary side (input from main wiring harness):
    2.7 ohms +/- 10% = 2.43 ohms - 2.97 ohms acceptable range

Secondary side (spark plug wires, without their end caps):
    12K ohms +/- 20% = 9,600 ohms - 14,400 ohms acceptable range

    Spark plug caps:
    1985 N/NC models: 5K +/- 20% = 4,000 to 6,000 ohms per cap acceptable range
    1986 S/SC models: 10K +/- 20% = 8,000 to 12,000 ohms per cap acceptable range

    Spark plugs:
    1985 N/NC models: 0 ohms per plug

Unscrew the caps as mentioned. Probe each spark plug wire by sticking multimeter leads into the wires them selves.

I went thru this last year and biggest issue was the cap was corroded. There is a spring, resistor and small little washer in my 81 xj550 and they were in bad shape. New caps was biggest help.

81-84 Honda CB750 coils are direct swap in , Cycle Recycle part 2 sells a kit brand new coils 40 each and they carry the replaceable plug wires and caps as well . This is cheaper and does not require modification like the Dyna coils which are also more expensive.

all 4 of my plugs have no spark, makes me wonder if there is another issue, one coil is stock and one is aftermarket. Cannot remember the exact numbers but primary had read 3.5 on lowest setting and secondary had no read on any setting on the multimeter. Will have to play with it again tomorrow to check.. don’t remember checked caps though so I will definitely look into that.

The coils look just like the stock coils and are made by Hitachi only difference you have to flip them around and they clear the tank with no modification.

I have put XJR1300 coils on both of my bikes from the Wreckers.
Cheap! but a bit of modification needed... couple of brackets and spade terminals.
Good way to replace the whole lot in one hit and they work.
Must admit I didn't do 'any' research into impedance or anything so... there is that downfall on my part.

Seems unlikely. You have verified power to the coils and TCI, and that the safety circuit is not engaged during your multimeter testing?
