I recently bought a motorcycle at auction, all the paperwork says is '82 Yamaha and the VIN. It has the YICS inline-four engine and from the research I've done I believe it to be a Maxim. According to bikebandit, in '82 the Maxim came in 550, 650 and 750 configurations. All badges, stickers or other identifying bodywork has either been removed or painted over (badly). I have searched the bike over looking for the displacement. On all of the other bikes I've owned the CC has been stamped into the engine somewhere, but I just can't find it on this bike.

So help me out guys, what size bike do I have? Where do I look to find out?

The 550 has a chain, the 750 has a bigger tank than 650. You did get a VIN # ?? the title sometimes states HP. The carbs have different jets #
    My 750 has 2 front rotors/calipers, don't 650's have just 1????

Yamaha also made an XS 400 Maxim (twin cylinder) and an 1100 Maxim in 1982,just to add a little more confusion to the mix.

Smooth, rounded tank, shaft drive, single front caliper, definitely NOT big enough to be an 1100, and I haven't had a chance to take a pic yet.

I do have the VIN, just not here with me right now, and I haven't got the title yet, just the paperwork to get the title from the auction.

Your description leads me to believe your bike is a 650. The 550 was chain drive, and the 750 had dual discs up front. Google image search XJ 650 Maxim, and see if it looks like your bike.Hope this helps, and best of luck to you!

I believe the displacement is stamped somewhere on the bottom of the engine block. Try putting a mirror on the ground underneath and see if you can find it.

Look on the front of the motor, right below the head gasket, between the middle two head pipes. The displacement should be there. My 650 Maxim says 653cc.

Get the XJ CD, it's cheap and very useful. There's a chart that lists all vin numbers for all XJ models. You'll get the answer to your question plus have tons of great info on how to maintain and improve your bike.
    thx,
    baz

    Hi , I have a 1981 , 4ko , xj650 , and it has twin discs on the front.if the engine no starts with 4ko then its a 650.With only one disc on the front I would think its a 550 . But I aint an expert.Here you go;
    MODEL FRAME NO DATE
    xj650(4k0) 4KO-000101 on 1980 to 1982
    xj650(11N) 4KO-055101 on 1982 to 1984
    xj650 G 4H7-000101 on 1980
    xj650 H 4H7-100101 on 1981
    xj650 LH 4W5-000001 on 1981
    xj650 J 5N8-000101 on 1982
    xj650 RJ 5V2-000101 on 1982
    xj750(11M) 11M-000101 on 1981 to 1984
    xj750 RH 5G2-000101 on 1981
    xj750 J 15R-000101 on 1982
    xj 750 RJ 5G2-100101 on 1982

European and UK versions of the XJ650 all had dual front discs, unlike the US/Canadian version which had a single front disc (except for the XJ650RJ Seca model, which had dual front discs). I believe the same thought applies to the Euro and UK versions of the XJ550 models in this era, they all had dual front discs.....whereas the XJ550 Maxim and Seca models in the US/Canada all had single front discs.

In fact, I believe that the Euro/UK versions of these bikes had no additional "model name" (i.e. "Maxim" or "Seca"); they were just called an XJ550 or XJ650.....and they all had the Seca style gas tanks, side covers, etc.

Yep I got mine , and never heard seca or maxim before I had a look on here.Ok now I know that those sneaky devils at Yamaha only gave you lot one brake disc each. Here in the UK we have 2. I wonder... Worse drivers , shorter roads . Ah I know , it rains all the time here.To be honest with you ,dont think I `ve heard of ,and have for sure never seen an xj 550 here.Good luck.

I know this thread is old, but do you know what diameter the dual European xj650 discs are?
