5395E3FB-EE75-4452-986E-AC5CD7B23AC0.jpeg Just purchased this partially modified 81 xj650 on kijiji and I am not sure if it is a seca or not. I want to covert to a cafe racer, I am new to project bikes and I found an 82 xj 650 seca engine with lower kms that I would like to buy but I want to make sure The parts are interchangeable or even that the 82 engine would fit. Thanks

It was a Midnight maxim, single disc, leading axle fork gold wheels. The engine bolts in but may have a different wiring harness and ignition box as the 82‘s came in 2 models in Canada early engines ( silver bikes) had mechanical tach without YICS. Later 82’s (red bikes) with YICS had electronic tach.

You hit the nail right on the head, just looked it up, black frame, gold wheels, same tires, black headers. That’s awesome thanks!

The shifter is definitely Maxim too, although that could be swapped out.

I think the tank is an XS 750 tank. I don’t know frames well enough to tell from the pic but the VIN should clear that up if there is any concern.

Whats your plans for the project?

If I get a chance, I’ll compare it to my xs750’s...the bike itself though is an XJ 650 midnight maxim

Ya your 100% right I was told the tank was off a 1977 xs 750, and I plan on making a cafe racer. The previous owner had it running last year but he said there was a wiring issue Because when it would idle it would shut off. My plans are to strip it down clean it up make sure everything looks ok then put it back together and re wire it. Once I know I can get it running I’ll start to convert to cafe racer
