New to xj bikes and trying to get my xj650rj running

    I have just started to work on my XJ650RJ. I have some hope that it wont be that tough a project because the last rider it had added an oil cooler and stainless brake lines and a drilled set of rotors that are still in good shape. The bike has 39,000 miles and tires are in pretty good shape. What I need help on is if any of you have pictures of the 2 areas under the side covers and looking down on the air filter. These are the pictures of my bike in the areas that I am talking about.

    on the last picture I am kind of worried about the stub of wiring that sticks out above the air filter box. It looks like some one may have cut something off of one leg of the wiring harness. The other question I have is where is the fuse block on an 82 650RJ. I haven't pulled the battery box to see if it is under that yet.

    The fuse box should be where that nub of wiring is. On my bike it was on top of the airbox cover. I replaced mine with blade type fuses. Looks like you might have a set of S&W Street Stroker shocks too. Had a set on my Seca, replaced them with a set of Marzocchi Emblem series shocks. I would do a search on replacement fuse blocks. There are several writeups on here, and it is a worthwhile mod. cruzerjd

    Somebody did a Fuse Panel Delete on you. You should undo the the taped stubs, sort-out the wiring and you'll fine the Wires that are for Ignition, Accessories, Lighting and Turn Signals.

    All you have to do is some careful splicing and extending of those wire and Install a new Fuse Panel.

    Looks like they are just spliced together right now which is a bit dangerous if you have a short.

    The first picture is missing the TCI (ignition control) there should be two connectors there that connect to it. When mounted, the TCI's connectors point towards the rear. Edit: Item 29 in Gamuru's picture

    It looks like you're missing #10, too. You'll want to get that or the bike won't crank over (unless you bypass it).

    The TCI is not missing, it's the item hanging there with the green label. It should be mounted on the plate beside the voltage regulator.

    Bruce before I came back to check out my post I just saw the pictures in your gallery and they are a huge help. With them and the drawing that Don posted I feel like I at least have a fighting chance. I already got a wiring harness on ebay and thought I might get a new fuse block and a spin on filter adapter from chacal but I need a part number for the adapter.

    I think the fuse block is hard-wired to the wiring harness. So probably wait until you get the harness before ordering a fuse block. Of course, if you get a used harness, the fuse block may be toast anyway. On mine, the box was OK but the fuse sockets were loose / missing. So I cut out the fuse sockets from the box and glued in a replacement block. The replacement uses the regular-sized fuses; so a little easier to find new ones in a pinch. The whole thing fits inside the original box. So it looks a little more stock than the blade type replacement blocks. Not that that is a big issue for me though - I just couldn't find a blade type block around here.
