The bike is fine, new clutch is cheap and easy to do.

I already bought a new clutch set up, I was pretty upset and still on the side of the road with plans ruined waiting for a tow truck when I posted that. It didn't look very promising when I took the clutch cover off and found that my pressure plate had turned to gravel.

Took apart the front end and gave my fork lowers a coat of black paint because the original clear was looking pretty bunk. Next week the tank and side covers go to the paint shop for as close to a factory black-red as they can get.

Finally got my carbs back together! Was having issues with the throttle shaft seals. Took a lot of searching on here to find that they are not 11mm but #11 O-rings!! (5/16 ID x 7-16 OD x 1/16). The 11mm ones I tried made it way too tight.
Used X-rings on the inside, #11 on the outside and the butterflies snap shut. Wet level set, carbs synced and off to the races.
Going to do some plug chops to see where I need to go for jets as I’ve gone back to factory, but it’s working well. Thanks to all the gurus on here for your knowledge.

Was able to get it spark on all 4 plugs. Now moving on to the carbs... Any tips on cleaning without rebuilding?

Yes. Don't. Unless you rebuilt them once yourself already, avoid the aggregation and do it while they're out. Seems like everyone that tries to just clean them has to has to rebuild them anyways.

I am rebuilding my carburettors and l think it is better to do this than risk running problems later. Do the work thoroughly and you should be rewarded with a reliable bike.

Home made clutch basket holding tool. Easy to make and does the job.

You’ll see a bunch of posts on here about people having to do their carbs multiple times to get it right. I’ve been that guy too. The more you fix right the first time they’re apart, the less you’ll have to worry about as you go along. And o rings and carb cleaner are not friends.
    Good luck moving forward!!

Rode it around illegally, cause sometimes that’s what you need to do, when your title is in limbo but you have a tag that might not prompt too many questions. New to me 82 650 runs great other than wanting to die at idle and a little hesitation when powering up for a hill. Time to tackle the carbs I reckon. Even with the hesitation it’s nice to have something to ride and I don’t know that I’m dedicated enough to get them clean and back on the bike in a day. Maybe I’ll check the valves first....

Couple of days ago replaced the speedometer back cover, the reset knob and clutch safety switch (courtesy of Mr. Fiddles).

Yesterday installed a windshield. Smoked is still hardly visible.
