I own a 1983 XJ750 midnight maxim and would like to replace the rear shocks with longer units to speed up the steering and get more leg room. Does anyone have experience with this?

due to the u joimt you are limied to changing the shock length about 2 inches down so I assume up as well.
changing shocks is not going to give you more leg room to brake or shifter, just off the ground.

you could put taller tire or a seca 750 rim may fit the rear

I have the same bike and the same question. Getting a bit older now and am too tall for riding this low. I think my shocks (stock) are 12". I was thinking about buying the 412's 13" (let's be honest, the stock back shocks suck) but I'm wondering about clearance between the right side exhaust and the swing arm. the other think I was thinking about is a custom rebuilt seat that sits 6" higher. Any comments about that?

If you want more legroom go with the taller seat, and highway pegs. You won't change ergonimics by changing the shocks.
Your stock shocks suck beacuse they are worn out. They were a damned fine shock when new.
