Xj700x Carburetor Issue

    I recently helped a neighbor with his 1985 XJ700x maxim. Before the carbs were flowing into the crank case. Now that I installed the new kit they are flowing out the overflow. I have checked the passages and can not find any blockages. Any ideas what it could be?

    Setting the fuel levels

    Who did you get the parts kits from? There are at least two kits on the market that do not have the correct float needles.

    This is the kit I purchased. I tried putting the old needles in and had the same issue.

    Look at the old float needles and the new ones and see if they are the same length. That could be a issue but it it was already flowing out before the rebuild, sounds like the "Wet set" needs to be done. Please take your time with these carbs, do them right the first time and you will love the results. Not having to take them in and out a bunch of times. The wet set really does take some time but is so worth it. If you stay with the stock petcock that could let fuel slip by when the engine shuts off. With a petcock rebuild kit and the wet set done on the carbs you should be good.

    I figured out what it was. The float itself was sticking in the open. As soon as I would flip them over and set them down on the bench it would close. I do not know how this happened but it did. One of the most challenging issues I have had working on carbs.
