OK, so I've recently purchesd this 85 xj750 seca and there's been a lot of conflicting answers on helping me. I thought the bike was an American import (to UK) and the vin number also states that its older than listed on log book.. I'll post some picture here and hopefully you guys can help. Thank you!!

    Interesting bike you have there.
Many elements are the same as the N.American 82 XJ650RJ Seca, ie; wheels, forks, tank, side covers, tail piece.
Speedometer has the goofy 55 mph redline from the USA, tachometer has 7,000 rpm redline??
Idiot light cluster from an XS Yamaha??
Chrome rear fender looks like an 85 XJ700 Maxim piece, Chrome front from Maxim or XJ550?
Headlight is smaller than XJ650 Seca.
    Exhaust looks like 750 Seca.
My suspicion is this is a collection of parts not originally assembled by Yamaha.

So I believe the headlight unit is just a random headlight with a UK beam pattern on it.. The engine is rubber mounted, I was told its possibly a restricted model with low lift cams for American Market..
Im in need of a starter motor and starting solenoid for it and also I don't know what battery model I need.
Could you help me with that too?
This is why I'm trying to find out what the bike is hahaha. Only had it 2 days and it has my head away already!!

    Thank you

There are two places to get the VIN. On the right side of the steering neck, and above the transmission to the rear of the clutch housing.

I agree that she's not as-is from the factory, but it looks like it started out as a 750 Maxim. The big clues being the rubber mounted engine, the chrome fenders, and the lack of an anti-dive on the front fork.

TECH TOPIC: Model ID and VIN's

The good news is that the engine is the same as the Seca 750; cams and all.
There is no bad news, except that it's not really a Seca, which isn't that bad.

    [EDIT]
The gauges are from an XS650, which has a mechanical tachometer ( I think for all years, but I could be mistaken). If the tach has a cable hooked up to the engine then you have the engine from a Maxim 650, and not from a 750.
Check both VIN#s to be sure which engine you have in that frame.

Hmm, the non anti-dive forks could be from a seca 650?

Actually, they probably are. The axle is smack in the centerline of the fork. The Maxim's axle trails the centerline. Good eye.

The more I look, the more I think that it might be a 650 Seca that had a 750 Maxim engine swapped into it, along with a swap of the headlight, handlebars, and fenders.
The XS650 gauges make sense then since the 750 gauges would have likely been the ATARI, and wouldn't have worked with the 650 wiring harness.

And Dummy me was reminded today of a model that the US never got.
This probably what you have as the base machine.

If so that means not many changes were made to it. Just fenders and instruments.

There would not have been a VIN plate fitted. It would be a sticker on the left side of the headstock. Is your frame stamped with a 17 digit VIN, or the short VIN?

Unfortuantely I haven't found a photo of the VIN sticker for that model.

Yea the frame is stamped on the headstock, but there's 2 small holes in the frame where it looks like there should've been a vin plate.. Obviously due to age and use the sticker has decided to leave the bike at some point
But thanks for your help!! (again)
