Hey everybody, got a 1986 yamaha maxim 700 for sale. It pretty good shape. Been dropped once so it's got a dent on the pipes and a broken knob off the clutch lever. I'm in Richmond Virginia asking 2500 with 20000 miles.

Clean her up (elbow grease/polish - especially on top of the carbs and the engine block, make all the non-painted metal shine) and repaint her, then sell her (assuming she is running) and you'll get a lot more. Speaking of which, when was the last time you had her running? Are the carbs tuned? Valve clearances all in spec? With 20 valves it is a bit of work, not un-fun when you are in love.

You could do a couple of little upgrades to make it more appealing for little cost in addition to cleaning all of the metal: replace the fuses and the fuse box (the XJ fuse boxes are notoriously bad. They were bad when they were new!) Replace the dash bulbs with LEDs (lowers the electrical load and makes the dash much easier to read day or night.) If you replace the turn signal bulbs with LEDs they are much brighter with a much lower electrical load but they won't turn off automatically anymore, that requires he electrical load of incandescent bulbs. If you dig deep enough, somewhere there is a fix for this but I forget what it is.). Well worth it in my opinion. These bikes barely produce enough electricity to run themselves stock, and that is new. In order to add a few lights to save your life you have to lighten the load of the stock lights. Replacing the incandescents with LEDs is really your only option and it is something everyone should do, now matter how much of a "stock purist" you are. Unless you a using it in a parade, make yourself seen! Definitely replace the headlamp with a current one. Won't cost much but will make it so much safer. If I were riding it I'd add oscillator to the headlamp and add a few other LED running lights for visibility - front, side and rear. And definitely put in an LED for the brake light to make that baby shine. Check out https://www.superbrightleds.com That's where I got all of mine. (I have no affiliation and get no kickback.)

Biking is a lot of fun but the most dangerous part is all of those cage drivers that just don't see you and don't look for you. Make yourself seen! Hell, add some streamers and sparking pinwheels if it keeps you hale ...

Valves were adjusted a year ago, same for the carbs, it runs fine she cracks right up. I crank it once or twice a week. It's a fun bike I just feel really cramped on it after riding the vulcan I have now.

I have an X as well. I spent a couple of years fixing all the things a n00b who wanted to ride a Harley screwed up trying to make it sound like one. He *cut* out the air box, installed pods, put on Harley exhaust, had the coils from a Honda *car* **hanging** loose, shorting out against the engine block, etc., and couldn't figure out why it ran like a dog. He even managed to burn out half the TCI. I was gifted by someone here who gave freely of his time and talents to repair the TCI. He did a beautiful job. I just had a few finishing touches to go when i was laid low by illness. Now I am giving it to my brother.
