Value for near mint 1982 xj650 seca

Got a line on this one. Has 9,000 miles and is all stock. Basically a really clean survivor. Owner says it had a 52 point inspection and all is good. Carb boots were replaced. New plugs, other minor stuff. Says it runs flawlessly. Owner wants $2,200. What is a reasonable selling price? Is $2,200 fair?

 

For that price it would already be in my garage. Those are hard enough to find in any condition let alone that nice. That’s a great price.

 

That's looks to be a real nice example of a Seca 650. If your not familiar with them it was a one year only model (in the US), so not as common as the Seca 750.Bring $2200, and maybe he'll let it go for a little less.

Just don't insult him with a low-ball.

I hate when someone does that when I'm trying to sell a nice bike like that.

That’s a great price, but agreed on the grips and I don’t see any red on the gauges....they look faded to white with what I can see. Still, probably a good score at that price. But until YOU see it, HEAR IT RUN...... could be anything

 

If it runs as well as it looks that is a great buy. Takes me back to when I first saw a 650 new.

 

Where should the gauges be red? What should I be looking for?

Unfortunately he didn’t send one. I haven’t seen the bike yet. It’s about a 1.5hr drive for me.

Here’s what the gauges should look like. If the red is faded, it’s a good indicator that it spent a lot of time outside in the sun. Not a huge deal.

That’s ok For the USA, There was a difference of the 650 Maxim and the 650 seca. For you, it’s just the Xj650… Which is what we call the 650seca

I know… But for somebody who does not know they are faded… They would not know that there should be a lot of deep rich red instead of a lot of white

 

I prefer the Seca 650 gauges be nice on my XJ 900f I think.

 

That is a very nice bike at a nice price. Faded gauges are a non issue. Joel Levine Company can make them new. At the price on that bike, you can have them redone and still be ahead.

 

Pipes have been repaired, you can see patches on the RH silencer and silver paint on the collector.
Still a very nice bike.

This ignores decades of US and Canadian imports to the UK, a trade which is actually increasing.
Edit to ask the question - did the maxim come with round gauges in the US or Canada then?

Misunderstanding cleared up this threw me - I thought it ref.d a later post with a picture of round gauges. It was rather late last night...
Maxim (650 anyway) flat bottomed gauges only. The range of different ones is surprising - mph with km/h, without, km/h with and without mph, little red light and japanese script, there must be many more.

 

The 650 I like but Yamaha could have made a 900 like it too. That would have been great.

 

I bought my 650 Seca this summer which is mostly mechanically sound (had to fix float needle valves, needs some maintenance items) but with some cosmetic flaws. Sounds like I got a good deal at $1300. The pic doesn't show that the tank needs some bodywork, the prized headlight bezel has a dent with a kink, etc.

 

I agree with you. I have a 900 that may end up with that style, the tank fits (just about anyway), the difficult bit is the seat and plastic around it. And yes you could fit a 900 engine in a seca, but the 900 has a stiffer frame, better brakes etc.
In fact I have a plan to fit 900 diversion running gear, but not found a breaker near me with one - yet..

 

Plenty of diversions just getting the right one. Your 900f is the Yellow one with the RD stripes on it I think. Can you make the plastic parts in metal like you did with your other bike and weld them, might be an option. An XJ 900f that looked like an XJ 650 would be super. I would like another 900f motor but they are difficult to find now as a spare.

My opinion, and that is all that it is, is that it is way over priced. There is a lot there that is not stock. It is nicely done but it has been done over quite a bit. If he can get that for it he will be very pleased with himself. From the distance and detail of the photos it is nice but I don't think it is that nice.
If you are looking for one to buy for a daily rider there are a lot out there more reasonable. Keep watch of the For Sale section here. And just for perspective, those are one of my favorite bikes ever........

I agree! And, honestly, I am watching from the perspective of my own equity, thinking about how much I should eventually invest in mine. I tend towards basically stock (add braided lines, heated grips, and a windshield for longer rides) and keeping it a rider, but I may repaint the tank, as mine has a lot of scratches. Mine is my 2nd 650 Seca, I had one from age 18-28, and just bought the current one (I'm 49 now...). But if anyone REALLY wants to give me $3k for it.......

 

I'd like to think a showroom 650 Seca could fetch $4,000.
I'd take at least $1000 off for missing instruments, blinkers, mirrors, passenger pegs, cut rear fender and puffy seat.
I think $2,700 is a reasonable price, maybe $2,900 if that exhaust is correct and mint.

I've noticed a recent jump in prices for old bikes. XS650's are close to what Brit bikes fetch.
Amongst our XJ's, I think the 650 Seca has aged the best and has the most potential to appreciate.

 

I agree with Simmy on this because of all the missing or incorrect parts, but it sure doesn’t bother me to see the prices climbing like crazy, either.

 

I think @Simmy is spot on with those prices as well.
