Doe's any one know what the danger temperature's are for air cooled motor's at idle using a inferred temperature gauge checking at the spark plug or the cylinder fins for example.

you want to know what is considered overheating?
when working on motor tuning you can runn a fan or two to help cool

The engine was designed to idle without overheating.
That's a standard practice when developing any aircooled engine.

So you can leave your bike sitting at idle, no matter what the temp is outside ( if you are doing this outside ) walk away, come back at some point ( Hours ) and no damage is done to the engine ?

Not to that extreme, no. Thankfully, it would probably stall after 10 min or so. But you won't hurt it.

Idling for an extended period of time will eventually begin to overheat the motor; once that happens it won't want to idle properly and will be clearly unhappy. When doing a carb sync for instance, it does pay to have a fan or two blowing air over the motor to keep it happy during the process. Then when it becomes cantankerous, you let it cool back down before proceeding. But a carb sync and just idling are two different things and I don't know how much longer it would take to overheat just sitting at idle, something it was designed to tolerate. Assuming a 101% state of tune, of course.

Thing is, it's not a common occurrence; you pretty much have to cause it. And as such, I don't know that any of us have ever thought to measure or record engine temps, although it's possible. I never have.
