Ok. One side says front and one side doesn't. Does front mean facing me or facing the front of the bike?

I recommendation that you purchase a factory service manual online in PDF form for under 10 bucks .

    Large Bolt with o-ring.
Cover, notch on cover go's up into recess on block.
    Spring first into cover
    Washer rest on spring
Concaved section of filter rest on washer towards exhaust headers not engine block.
    Large o-ring on cover.
    Notch on cover straight up
Not too tight, grease the end of the threads of the large bolt with anti seize to ease install on to block.
I use silicone grease on the o-rings and reuse the o-rings several times before replacing without any issues.

"Not too tight" = 11 ft/lb (132 in/lb) "too tight" being open to wide interpretation...

So you are saying front facing front front of bike.

Yes, "FRONT" marked on any part generally indicates "front of bike" not you holding it in your hand.

If you look at the 'stack' carefully, you'll see that the slightly concave side of the filter provides clearance for the spring; the spring presses the flat side of the filter against the motor; and the thin washer protects the rubber seal on the filter from the spring. If you analyze what's intended here, you don't need the book, it makes perfect sense. One more tidbit: right on the filter housing above the bolt "1.5 kg-m" is cast into the housing. That is the torque spec in kilograms per meter, an oddball connotation since the world seems to have settled on newton-meters (or foot p0unds) for that. (It directly converts to 10.849520776814849 ft/lb, so 11.)

I have had my bike since new, and even after 30+ years of oil changes, I have to look at this picture almost every time I change the filter LOL.
