As cool as she is now, it might be advantageous to return her to original colors and spec (varies by department).

 

Extra cool, I Bought my 750 Maxim to finally build my RAT bike but took a right turn. Great bike. I think the XJ bikes are some of the best "end of the world" bikes out there.

Nope.. it's a original red one from Canada. I build it myself from scrapparts mainly 'coz I'm into the ratbikescene for 20 years now.
Even started it in The Netherlands; www.rataplan-ratbikeclub.nl. Though I'm not a member anymore I'm still affiliated with them.
My first rat.mil-bike was a V65 Magna called Swamp and won several prices with that bike. Google; Swamp Survivalbike JPi.
But got tons of pics ofcourse because rode more then 13 years on that bike all through Europe to attend Ratmeetings.
The Seca might be considered as the light-version of the first one.
Easier to handle, more economical, enough power and MUCH easier and cheaper to maintain.
Got an extra engine in spare and another seca dismantled in parts so.. for the longrun I guess.

 

I've got those same Krauser bags on my Seca. They were among the best on the market back in the day and really suit the looks of the Seca line.

 

The extra display above the gauge cluster was only put onto police models. It records the maximum speed of the bike for the purpose of determining the speed of a vehicle that is being persued (the persuing bike matches speeds with the target, and then records the speed). Perhaps yours is not in working condition. Perhaps the gauges came from a breaker instead of coming on the bike.

 

Nope.. installed it myself with help from Ali. It measures the oiltemp. going in en out of the oilcooler, cylinderhead temp. and temp. of the yicsgallery. Just for fun.

Maybe you could share some of the numbers with us on the temperatures, particularly if you ever recorded any on a hot summer day?

Sure I can give you several numbers under almost any circumstances.
Last summer f.i. I rode through Germany with 36 C. on the autobahn/highway with 150 kmh full luggaged (7500 rpm). That means fully packed with krauser luggagetrunks, gastankbag, frontscreen and big tent/luggagebag behind me on the duoseat. And ofcourse with the legscreens. This ride lasted 12 hours from Poland to Amsterdam+40. A 1000km stretch.
Cylinderhead; 198 C., oil 92 in 85 out, yics 147, all under riding condition. When stopped the oil went up to 102 in. The others went, ofcourse, down.
A sensor in the finaldrive is next.
Under normal dry circumstances as in 20 dgr C. and legal pace in Europe (60-120 kmh) cyl.head up t0 140, yics 120, oil 80 in 75 out.
Oilconsumption is about 500 ml/10K in (very) hot conditions that is, otherwise almost zero. Motul 5100 is used.

 

I agree with the bikelines and the luggagerack on the bike. Had militairy metalcases but they destroyed the nice flowing lines and were wider than my steer, no option.. There are better ones nowadays but I'm a 70-80's guy and had them still lying around so.. lol
Still have to pack all in plasticbags because they are not waterproof but.. big deal .

 

Crankcase temp. rightside 108 (Germany).
The others went, ofcourse, down. Give or take 5-10 dgrs.
In the rain the temperatures are appr. 20 dgrs lower in general.
The oilsensors are placed just above the oilfilterhousing on the metalparts of the oillines, well insulated and shielded.

The new mufflers are delivering more torque and deeper sound that's for sure. Gasconsumption is still 1:20km so no complaints here but I think after some tweaking the carb's, as in synchronizing, it could become even better.

Well, when you arrive on a meeting or something and pitching your tent, you always are looking for a place to put your beer and/or your coat.
As it turned out these acc. come in quite handy.

 

You also need a small rack on the exhaust to place tinfoil-wrapped fish or pork steaks, so that you have a hot meal on arrival.

We had a member who had a double layer in his army-luggagecase and used the heated exhaustfumes to heat his dinner. The fumes through the lower part so he could use the upperpart foor heating food.

We have contacts in GB too and been there several times attending ratbikemeetings.
As in Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Guernsey etc.
At first when you meet regular (car)people they tend to take some distance but when a conversation starts they all think its great and many times handshakes are part of the moment.
Much nicer contact with these bikes because every item has a story (to tell). People seem to love those stories as I noticed again today at a supermarket..lol
Ofcourse only if you don't act like a asshole..

 

One of the sensors quit on me yesterday, the one on the cylinderhead.
But as it turned out after some searching while the sun was shining, everything has to be done outside and in november we hardly have sun overhere, the earthlead was loose so EZ fix.

Cobbed up kickstart!

 

Looks more like a pie than a cobbler.

 

Look at the kickstart. Pie looks like lemon meringue.

 

Trying to wrap my head about this one. If you just let it sit and cook you risk damage to the bike from overheating. If you put a pie in there and take off, the chances of the pie making it through the trip are very questionable. I guess I wonder why it was done?

That's likely just for illustration. If that were mine, I'd wrap the pie entirely in foil and go for a twenty mile run.
I'm fairly sure that's not one of his, but the late Capn Maurice Seddon used to despatch in London with a series of BSAs, and other old iron. On at least one of them he had a similar arrangement with the exhaust heating a chamber into which he'd load a pot full of raw stew in the morning. By lunchtime, following a morning of runs around the City, he'd have a nicely cooked dinner.
I imagine he picked up the idea from his time in the army - the Desert Rats and others used to do exactly that kind of thing, and the idea wasn't new then.

2. It looks like a meat pie to me. With a very nice and poofy top crust.

There's a spot on the XJ where you can keep half a sub sandwich warm until dinnertime (the other half being eaten for lunch).

 

XJ's are/can be very versatile
