Im almost done with reassembly of my engine after fixing the starter clutch and I noticed that there is some play in the clutch basket. I know the half rings on the input shaft bearing are in place, otherwise the cases halves wouldn't close and I would've heard it fall into the engine. So is it normal to have play or do I have an issue here. Here's a highly amatuer video of the subject.

My bike was the same l replaced the needle roller bearing behind the clutch basket. It was making an intermittent screeching sound while running. New bearing fixed it.

How do you go about getting to that? Do I just need to remove the nut that holds the center clutch basket and everything else just slides off?

Yes remove the clutch centre nut. The basket, inner hub, thrush washer and bearing etc will come off. Remember to make sure the projections from the oil pump drive plate engage with the clutch basket on reassembly as shown.

Quick question, I know I could use a makeshift tool to hold the clutch basket still while trying to remove that nut but could I have someone hold the engine still at the time cover and then I break that nut loose? You think I could damage anything by holding it at that point?

Also, are the threads left handed or right handed on the nut?

As your engine is out of the frame you should get a metal bar and drill holes in it and bolt it to the universal joint on the rear of the crankcase. I think that would work as putting the rear brake on with the bike in gear locks the shaft too for slackening the clutch nut.

Or make a tool out of scrap metal or buy one they are not expensive.

Alright so I got the assembly out and need to clarify. Was it the needle roller bearing that is inside the oil pump drive sprocket or the one that the outer hub sits on? The one that the outer hub sits on looks fine to me, however the pump drive sprocket one has a decent amount of play on its cage.

Here's a picture of the drive , does that bearing come out? I tried to get it out but it didn't want to give.

I don't think the one on the pump sprocket is the problem one. The basket on your video was moving indicating play in the larger needle roller bearing. My basket bearing looked good too but it was not. The basket runs on the larger bearing and that is why the basket is moving in your video.

Put the basket and insert and bearing on the input shaft without the oil pump sprocket and rock it back and forth.

I have not tried to remove the small needle roller bearing from the sprocket. My clutch bearing sounded the same as this Suzuki.

I misunderstood your initial statement when you said behind the clutch basket. I took that as the pump sprocket bearing not the bearing the basket rides on. Well I've already kind of beat on the bearing in the sprocket so I guess I'm replacing that one too lol. I put the basket back on the shaft and I can feel the play there like you suggested. Did you replace the center piece that the inside of the needle bearing fits around as well?

l only fitted the large bearing and that fixed the problem. In your case fit both bearings it should be sorted.

I should have said the large bearing behind the clutch basket nut lol.

Welcome. And please use new bolts on your clutch. You can reuse springs if they are within spec but not bolts. You don't want bolts failing and your clutch getting damaged.

I definitely will be using new springs and bolts! Out of curiosity, have you had any experience with EBC friction plates?
