Hey all, been working on disassembling and cleaning the Hitachi carbs on my 1982 XJ650. Carbs 1, 3, and 4 all have 10mm nuts for their Enrichment Valve bodies. However Carb 2 has a 14mm nut. The nut is big enough that I cannot get a socket around it without hitting the carb body. And I can't get a wrench to turn because it hits the pivot arm. I'm kind of at a loss as to what to use here without grinding down one of my wrenches. Does anyone know why a 14mm is used here? Thanks! I can provide pictures if needed.

Should not be a 14mm, someone has swapped it with the wrong one or swapped a complete carb. Try a small punch on one of the flats Gently to get it to turn, that may work.

Toomanybikes, thanks! My father bought this bike in '82 model bike brand new in '83. I was born in '91 and it hasn't been ridden since then (cost of having kids I guess). Anyway, back in '08 or so I pulled the carbs and sprayed them down with cleaner enough to get the bike running (although not well). I didn't replace anything at that time and didn't even pull anything apart besides getting the carbs off of the bike. The bike only has 11,500 miles on it so I'm doubtful that my Dad had these apart, but I texted him to see if he ever did anything way back when. I've reached out to Chacal to see about purchasing a new valve body and once I have confirmation of that I will feel better about putting some pliers to it to get it out of there.

post photos when you have enough posts of nut and carb.

maybe a thin walled socket will work or grind down a socket.
may have to cut the wall off like a neutral switch socket. cut in the middle of the flats may be abe to get it loose enough to remove

Okay, great! I tried sanding down a socket last night, but I went too far with it and then it wouldn't grab. It also seems like 14mm is every so slightly too big. I talked to my dad and he does think he had it in a shop once because it was "running rough". Unless he was having problems starting I don't know why they would've replaced the enrichment valve, but I'm wondering if that is how this valve got here. I'll keep trying once I get a chance and see what I can do.

Harbor Freight might have a single Lambda type socket you can buy.
