Hi all. Joined awhile back think this is my first post. I would like to check a vin for an 82 XJ750 Maxim, it has the shorty vin and all the numbers are worn off the sticker on the headstock. I’ve done quite a bit of looking here and I’m afraid I’m too dumb to understand how to convert the short into the 17 digit vin. I did find a decoder of sorts that someone had linked on here but when I put in the short vin it comes up that it’s an ‘81 550. The sticker on the neck still says 04/82 and the engine says 748cc so I know that’s not right. Plus it has features that the 550 didn’t have. One thing that is a bit odd though is the first three digits are not in the same format as some that people have posted here. Instead of number, letter, number like all of yours, it’s two numbers and then a letter. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

One more thing, the numbers on the neck and engine match. 15R-019486. Not sure how to post pictures from my phones camera roll if that’s possible.

do you have a title to the bike?
worn vin sticker may present a problem if you need to get a vin check.
I get my vin check done at dealerships and they are willing to reconstruct the vin number from the short vin.
there is a company in canada that may reproduce the sticker for you

The worn sticker was not a problem for me, but then mine was titled with the short VIN.
The inspectors in Kansas, and in Ohio just asked me where the VIN was and I pointed to the headstock stamping.

I don’t have a title. I bought it to rob the front end off and have dual discs on my 550. I’ve got it posted for sale as a parts bike and someone wanted to know if they could check the vin make sure it’s legitimate. I gave them the stamped numbers and was told that was too short to run it which led me to all the research here and asking because all of you seem to know a heck of a lot more than me

The link was in a thread here, I can’t find it again though. I did leave the dash out when inputting the numbers but it came up as an 81 550 for some reason.

I’m still in the process at the moment. The bike is in bits so I could paint the frame and polish the engine, probably shouldn’t have done that until I actually had the money for all the paint. I bought parts to rebuild the forks and brakes. Forks are apart and I need to polish them still and I’ve run into a couple snags with the brakes. Mainly due to my own stupidity
