I pulled the carb rack this weekend to check the idle jets and blow everything out. The idle has been pretty good for a while but on my last ride it would die with the throttle closed.

After finishing, I refitted the carbs. The problem is something got jiggled and now the starter switch does nothing, not even a solenoid click. I measure 4-5v across the switch. The battery is good so this seems low. I assume it should be 12v, but I'm not 100% sure. The tail light and horn work.

The low voltage seems like a clue, but I'm not sure what to make of it.

What type of fuse box do you have, check the fuses first turn on the ignition and check the voltage on the connections the fuses fit into. Sounds like voltage drop mabe a loose connection when you removed the carburettors. I also believe your handlebar switch grounds through the handlebar, if you removed that to work on the throttle cable for example make sure it is clean and the screws are tight which clamp it to the handlebar to get a good earth.

Don't you just love electronic gremlins.... I would guess it is as mentioned above ^. These older bikes need to have all their wire connectors looked at and gone over. Just a nice thing to do so that you keep the gremlins at bay. The old fuse boxes really need to be replaced with newer blade fusses. Moving around the wires while you are holding down the starter button might help with the trouble shooting. Be safe, use common sense and you will find the gremlins.

I replaced the fusebox with blades 20 years ago. I did not touch the controls or cables when doing the work, other than needed to detach the carbs and remove the tank. The grounding of the button assembly is interesting, I will check that, as well as doing some wire movement while holding the starter.

    Thanks all, will update soon.

OK so by "soon" I meant 3 weeks.

    - I started it by shorting the relay. Ran normally. Idle not improved by my carb futzing :-(
    - relay ohms are good @ 3.5
    - pos side of relay to start switch is good.
    - neg side of relay to ground is open. Indicates sidestand/clutch/neutral or other wire or relay is bad.
    - At least 3 of the relays click when I flip the engine stop switch
