86 yx600. My fuel tank appears to be "moaning" after it runs. The noise seems to be coming from the coming from the fuel cap. Air is escaping through the cap assembly.

Can anyone provide some guidance on how to remedy this?

    Thanks in advance

Scroll down the link to the HRC fuel cap mod. I've done this on my XJR1200.

It's in the Carb tuning section for some reason.

I'm not at home right now so I can not confirm, but the tank cap assembly from your website looks different from the cap assembly on my radian 600. Are you sure this will work on a Radian 600?

On second thought, they seem to be compatible.

Why are you concerned with this?
Isn't it doing what it's supposed to do?

... I did not consider that it may be working as intended. I assumed that the gas tank cap assembly was supposed to create a seal. Is this not the case?

I had an old MZ in the 1970's to get to work on and it kept stuttering to a stop. The hole on the fuel tank cap was blocked creating a partial vaccum above the fuel in the tank and starving the engine of fuel. It had a clear plastic fuel line. When I slackened the cap the line filled with fuel. Air needs to get into the tank so you have nothing to worry about.

What do you mean by slackened the cap?

I had to turn the cap to remove it.

Thanks for all the help so far, guys. Just so I am clear on this, the fuel cap is in fact supposed to breathe a little bit?

it should have a vent if vent is clogged it may be forcing air out the seal

    air in and out
out as fuel expands in heat, air in as fuel is drawn into motor

Okay now I am starting to catch on. So the squealing may be caused by the vent, that FJ111200 reference near the top of this thread, being partially clogged?

YES. Most likely the fuel cap vent is partly plugged; the fuel tank has to "breathe" or it would vapor lock and stop allowing fuel to flow. Although yours is markedly different than the ones on most XJs the principle is the same. If it can be at least partially disassembled and cleaned, start there. I wish I could provide more specific answers but I've never dealt with that style before.

On some machines the vents can be offset to help prevent the ingress of water.

This is a dead thread, but I just figured out my problem. The previous owner removed the plastic or rubber fitting thing that fits into the bottom of the cap. It doesnt seal too well without it.
