Alright guys I cannot seem to figure this one out... I think it might be a sensor but you guys might have a better clue. I bought this XJ750 in great shape. Ran when parked. I cleaned out the carb (that was a hell of a process) and get it running and idling. I get it running in neutral then the moment I put it into gear it dies. The clutch is in and engaged. It does not jump or grind gears. It just dies. I thought it might be the kickstand sensor but I do not know if that is how they work. Do you guys have any guesses?

I guess it would make sense that the kickstand sensor was faulty or otherwise not working correctly - if it thought that the kickstand was deployed even if it wasn't.

sounds more like the clutch lever switch, you should be able to start and run the engine in gear if the clutch is pulled in------ like if you stalled it at traffic lights , you should be able to start in gear with clutch pulled in.
like wise, if the clutch switch is faulty, when you put it in gear, engine cuts out

My clutch switch is currently faulty. The only thing that I can't do is start the bike while in gear.
The side stand switch kills the bike when in gear as if the stand was down, regardless if the clutch switch is faulty or not.

    Exactly that ^^^^
My last post was on a cery short break at work, so I couldn't elaborate.

I clean the sidestand switch by peeling the rubber boot off (the rearmost one), spraying contact cleaner onto the base of the plunger while I work it in and out by hand until it moves freely. Then I follow up with a dry-film silicon lubricant. This is an annual event.

My side stand switch periodically fails and the result is what you are experiencing. If I am out and about, I have to reach down and "pull" the side stand switch out all the way (sometimes a light "kick" with my heel is enough). Then it usually runs. When I get home, time to clean the switch....
