    Hi everyone!
I purchased a 1980 XJ650 Maxim a few months ago. I knew nothing about how a motorcycle works but, with your help, I've learned a lot. I'm in the process of switching the handlebars and just replaced the clutch cable. The length seems correct but here is the problem:
When I pull on the clutch lever, it engages but it won't disengage. In other words, it seems as though the tension spring does not have enough tension to pull the cable back.

I have read a lot of info on this site about this issue and have tried various things but nothing seems to work.
Is it possible that there is too sharp of a bend in the cable, which is preventing the cable from moving properly? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you adjust the cable free play to factory settings? Do you need a pipe wrench to engage the clutch with the push lever?, in other words, does the clutch itself have enough spring tension? If you think there is a too sharp bend can't you route the cable different to test? I don't have a 650 but just some questions that pop up.
