Hello, I am putting a new chain on sprocket on my 1982 xj550 maxim. I did the back sprocket and was doing the front sprocket when I noticed on the new one that there is a spacer part or hump on the one side of the front sprocket. Does this spacer part or hump go on the inside towards the bike as I put it on or towards the outside away from the bike? These was nothing in the manual for that. Thanks

yay! 50 % chance I would get that right and i did...lol. I didnt remember seeing the hump when I pulled it off. Thanks XJ. hey another thing. The new chain I bought is like 2 feet longer than the old one. So I just measure using the old one and use a grinder to cut down the new one to the same size? bad writing as I am using gloves...lol

count the links then cut/grind the head off of the pin and drive it out

I'm about to do the same on my 550. Almost all the replacement chains need a chain tool to flare the new connecting link. I have read mostly bad reviews on the cheaper chain tool kits. I'd rather not spend a lot of money on a tool that I might only ever use 1 or twice the rest of my life. Any suggestions? I can get the old chain off as it has a master link. It sounds like the chain breaker is the weakest link of the cheaper tools?

buy the proper leangth chain 530/120 links

even the oring chains are cheap now and come with clip style master links get those chains.

I have a post from several years ago debating the value of purchasing o ring chains verses standard heavy duty chains.
the cost of the tool and at the time cost of the o ring chain was equal to replacing sprockets and chsins using the non oring style 3 times .
