Hi all, I’m working on my 82 XJ650 Maxim and I have a 4-1 exhaust system which appears to be a Mac 4-1 with black header and chrome slip on. When I look into the slip on, as you can see in the pictures I attached, it appears the two pieces of pipe do not line up together. I’m not sure if it’s ever been taken apart or not because it’s clearly not in pristine condition but is this how they come new? Is it designed like that so it muffles the noise more or has someone messed with the slip on before it ended up in my hands? I’m hoping someone who has had a system since it was new could compare what theirs looks like inside to mine.
    Thanks all!

i have a MAC megaphone muffler somewhere, i'll take look.
i doubt it makes much difference, they don't do too much muffling anyway

Thank you Polock. It appears to me as if someone took the end baffle out and when putting it back together, didn’t line it up properly but I don’t have any previous experience with these systems. Looking forward to seeing a picture of yours but if you think this one looks similar to yours then I’ll probably go ahead and put it on my XJ.
    Thanks again

compared to mine, where that hole is, should be a pipe that crosses over and must stop where your light is in your second picture.
where you have the hole, i have a pipe that i can't see the end of. it's hidden by the end cap.
    that puppy gona be loud
stainless steel pot scrubbers stuffed in there take some of the bite out

Hmm so it’s as if they run almost beside eachother to create a little cavity of pressure? Kind of hard to imagine yours but from what I am imagining, it’s basically the same thing that I have, correct? You’re saying you can’t see the end of the inner pipe but it runs in the direction my flashlight is in the second picture, similar to what I see in mine. I’ll throw the pipe on my bike tomorrow and see if it makes a big difference on my jetting, hopefully not (fingers crossed). Did you have to make any changes if/when you used it?

i never did get the MAC muffler to work....but i had a homebrew air cleaner (one layer of UNI fine and one layer of UNI medium on a stock frame)
both air filter and muffler determine the jets. i think most guys with stock air filters use MAC pipes on the stock jets.
i went with a supertrapp and tuned the # of plates
