all the 650 motors will run on the tci's out there . in US there are 3 tci, one is a black label , and a green lable these are used in the non YICS motor. the red label is used in the yics motors.
at the worst if you have non yics motor and tci and want to install a yics motor you should also change over the pickup coil assembly.

That's interesting. Is the pickup different, or just in a slightly different position?

    Pick-up coils:
    1980-81 XJ650 Maxim and Midnight Maxim: 700 ohms +/- 20% = 560 ohms to 840 ohms acceptable range
    1982 XJ650RJ Seca (non-yics engines): 700 ohms +/- 20% = 560 ohms to 840 ohms acceptable range
    1982-84 XJ650 Maxim: 650 ohms +/- 20% = 520 ohms to 780 ohms acceptable range
    1982 XJ650RJC Seca (yics engine): 650 ohms +/- 20% = 520 ohms to 780 ohms acceptable range

The 3 different TCI's differ in this manner:

    - non-yics XJ650 motors had a different advance curve than the yics motors, and:
    - tci's for bikes with a sidestand switch (and thus relay) had an extra pin for interpreting the "sidestand up or down?" position (and thus killing the TCI output if the sidestand is down).

For the North American XJ650 models, it breaks down this way:

    * 1980-81 XJ650 Maxim models have a non-yics motor, and no sidestand switch (and uses the TCI labelled 4H7, black label)
    * 1982 XJ650RJ Seca have a non-yics motor, but do have a sidestand switch (and uses the TCI labelled 5V2, green label)
    * 1982-84 XJ650 Maxim models have a yics motor and also have a sidestand switch (and thus uses the TCI labelled 5G2, red label)...this TCI is also used on all 1981-83 XJ750 air-cooled models, and on the Canada-only XJ650RJC model equipped with a yics engine).

NOTE: the extra terminal in the TCI (for the sidestand relay signal) on the 5V2 and 5G2 tci's is just a ground circuit, and thus either of these TCI's can be used in place of the 4H7 tci, since the extra terminal on the 5V2/5G2 tci's will go to "nothing".........but, the "sidestand-capable" TCI's accept a single 4-place and a single 6-place connector shell (on the main harness), whereas the "non-sidestand" 4H7 tci requires two of 4-place wire harness connectors shells (and cannot accept a 6-place connector). Of course you can always swap out a shell if you want to use a "sidestand-capable" TCI on a non-sidestand XJ650 model.
