Identifying model type

    I recently bought an xj off of facebook. Was listed as an 80 xj750; bought it, brought it home and ran the vin as a 1983 xj550 maxim. However, the tank is looks to be off a seca, came with a box of plastics from a 750, and some i think from a 650, and the bike is shaft driven. I thought the 1983 maxims were chain driven? So im curious as to if theres a thread to identifying which model i have?

    Welcome to the Yamaha confusion factory. I’ve never fathomed out why they used letters to designate models that didn’t tie up with the letter on the vin, throw in exports all over the world and sometimes it gets difficult. 550 was chain, everything else shaft. Engine ccs on the barrels behind the headers, maxim is cruiser style, all 650s had steel bars.
    Someone will tell me if I’m wrong...

    Knew it! The 700 and 750 maxim also had steel bars. Not sure about the x liquid cooled

    Still be easiest to show is a pic. We can tell right away what it is. Of course, the OP hasn’t checked in here since posting the question, so there’s really no point in conjecturing right now.

    The handlebars.
    A few models of XJ had rectangular-section aluminum bars with steel tubes for the controls and grips.

    To name a few.
