    Check for a loose fuse.
Then check for loose plugs in the wiring harness.
It may also be that a wire has come loose from the signal switch. The OEM soldering job was not fantastic, and a good jarring blow could definately pop a wire loose.

Knowing the year and model of XJ will help, since there are several differences in wiring across the range.

if both sides have stopped working. I would think to look inside the control as Kmoe said the solder joints pop off inside the control sounds like the power wire.

maybe all 4 bulbs gave up but doubt ful.

with a meter or test light you can test the sockets for power and ground.

maybe the connector fell off of the blinker relay you could also test the power wire to relay for voltage.

when testing for voltage test at fuse if you have voltage at fuse
then test outer points, Bulb socket. volts at sockets replace bulbs
    no voltage at sockets
test voltage to relay wire at connector.

voltage there test connector to control

test grounds same way meter to positive on battery . test outer shell of bulb socket then ground connectors of wires to sockets

then if no power the relay
