Help on getting my 1983 Xj750 on the road

So here’s a very detailed description

first I was holding down my throttle and maybe maxing my speed for a while or two one day I tried to pull off I had no power going to the wheels in all gears

1. I did a clutch plate change they looked horrible a couple friction plates needs ti be changed I changed it but when I started her back up she still didn’t ho any where now she won’t start from a cold start I have to open my carbs up a little bit more with my hand to fire it u
2. I can shift gears and in and out of neutral and when fired up she starts to smoke from the front of the engine after awhile

 

Interesting...still not fully following what is going on.

A little back ground on the bike is needed. Was it sitting for a long time before you got the bike?

If so have you cleaned the carbs? Checked the gas tank for rust and other stuff?

One day you were riding at full throttle and then the bike just cut out with no power? You had to pull off because you had nothing.

Have the fuse holders been looked at for damage, cleaned or changed out to a blade type fuse system?

As for the smoke, that would be a valve cover leak and a little oil is finding it way to the exhaust pipe area and supper heating. Just a guess.

So I’m the second owner the first owner had the bike since 83 originally built he said he only rode it on cruise season I was riding for about two weeks everything sounding good I’m just not use to bike going that slow so on the freeway I pretty full throttle a hour a time but one day I was at the street corner and when I tried to give it throttle it didn’t go any where I kick it in second hardly moving 7 mph then once I hit far enough it just stopped I towed it home that’s why I changed the clutch plates haven’t gotten carbs cleaned yet I think it is a updated fuse I checked electrical everything lights up as should now when I try to turn her she’ll turn but I have to pull up on the metal piece that connect the choke a little more after a minute or two I can let it go and turn down the choke but once I hit gears it still don’t go anywhere once I give it gas

 

Sounds to me like you need to take a look at carbs. If you were running full throttle how fast were you going? These bikes will go 60 mph in 5th gear at 4 to 4.5k rpm. If the carbs are working and the valves are in adjustment and good compression, you would be doing triples at full throttle. 100+

With these bikes if everything seems to be working right but it is not running right, the carbs need to be taken to the "church of clean". It is a good practice to take a look inside them anyway as it was sitting for a length of time before it became yours. Keep us posted.
