Just curious. Is there some fundamental difference between the XJ and XS series?

XS's were the predecessor of the XJ series.
Most of the XS's are vertical side-by-side twins (1100 is the exception). Most XJ's are inline 4's (400 is the exception).
Quite a few parts of the late model XS's are actually interchangeable with the XJ's.

Also, the XS 750 and 850 were triple cylinder bikes. And although there was a 400 Maxim,it carried the XS designation.

Oddly enough - the 400's can carry either the XS or XJ moniker - they were a JDM import.

Yeah and the 850 vibrates like mad! My dad bought a 850 to get back into riding a couple of years ago and maybe it was just his but we could never get the vibrations under control, it ran great and pulled strong but vibrated like crazy (you would think w 3 cylinder would be more balanced  ). Very tall, top heavy bike too... I'll stick with my Seca.

Here is a picture of the "No Chain Gang" An 81' XJ650, 81' XS1100, and an 80' XJ750

Note the xj650 has a xj750 triple tree, the turn signals are higher up on the headlight.

I disagree XJ>XS. Look at 1/4 mile times and hp/torque figures. Although the 650 comparison isn't fair, 650 4 cylinder vs 650 twin, DOHC Vs SOHC, Shim under buckets VS rocker arms, etc. I love the XS 650's, but my 650 Seca keeps me happier. Nice and smooth below 6k, then all hell breaks loose and 100+mph top end rush. The XS is really popular with the Cafe and street tracker crowd though. The XS1100 was a real pleaser though, gave 4 cylinder type power with shaft drive and really opened up an era. the 750/850 triples weren't one of my more popular choices. Power was down vs the 4 and they shook a bit. You could get some real power out of them back in the day, but performance stuff now is NLA. I passed up a 14000 mile 850 a while back at $800. As for the 400's. I had a 1982 XS400 cruiser, good power and great mileage, had starting troubled though, and eventually bent a valve. Compared to the earlier 400's though, it had better power and better handling than all but the later CB450's or the later GS450/500's. Never messed with the XJ400 twin cam but they seemed pretty spry for a small twin. Looked cool too. cruzerjd

So I'll jump in here and ask if anyone can point me in the direction of more info, I have an 82 xs400j, and because it's not so common, I'm looking for sources for info on oversize pistons or big bore options. I know the xs boys are swapping in lots of parts from other models, but because of the ycis system, I'm not sure of many people who've done it. One guy has suzuki gs500 pistons and sleeves in. I would prefer not to re-sleeve for now, but later on that option isn't entirely off the table.

What I'm wondering is what other oversize pistons will fit? I am struggling to find oversize rings.
Also, I'd like to put in new bearings all around. For the counterbalancer shaft as well as the bottom end, as well as con rods.
I'll be in touch with the dealer today, and will update with info that I get from then, and will be giving away stock parts off my bike to any who lead me on the path to smooth riding glory.

I'm doing this all because the bike sat for at least 4 years, had a lot of crust all over the carbs until they met me, and has 64,000 kms

    XS400, correct?

    XJ400?

I always believed the XJ400 was twin cam and has nothing to in common with the XS. I thought like XS650 and XJ650 have only similar displacement in common.
